What's this gotta do with me?

Welcome to my blog! My name is Lizzy and I am currently a 7th and 8th grade math teacher based in the Chicago suburbs. On the side I am an avid strength trainer, and pre-triathlon trainee. I have a passion for self development. But doesn't everybody say that?
Well here's the thing. I was mediocre most of my life: at the bottom of the above average group in almost anything. And when you live there, you quickly learn that coasting is sufficient enough to get through school, sports, clubs, relationships. You learn you're pretty good, but nothing worth noting. And life begins to gloss over you.
It wasn't until I found a passion for teaching that I started to see what success could feel like. And then I shifted my passion to also include fitness. Again, I was nothing special of an athlete. A naturally talented lacrosse player, but with no devoted drive to be elite. And when it came to running? I was happy with an 11 min mile.
But then there was a shift in my physical performance. I began improving, getting faster, stronger, more dedicated and disciplined. I reached beyond my mediocre lifestyle and embraced the possibility of greatness.
So what's it gotta do with you?
We all want to be better than what we currently are. And we all are better in one way or another than where we used to be. But why? when did that shift happen? What areas are you best at? Where did you learn this extra gear or drive?
I am bringing this blog to hopefully uncover these answers for us. And in turn bring light to a better education system that can create greatness in our youth so they can uncover their potential sooner than we had to. And be given tools and belief systems to help them thrive instead of survive this outdated structure we've come to accept.
What are we educating for? Who are we trying to create from this system? These and so many more questions left to be answered.
