Teacher Gaps: who are we going to lose

If you ask any teacher if they are happy passionate or even like their job you’ll find one of a few responses.

  1. “I’ve just got to make it to retirement in X amount of years”

  2. “If I do t get out in the first 10 years I’ll never leave”

  3. “I’ve been in it for 9+ years, it’s too late for me to leave… but I want to”

We are going to run into the issue of a major gap in teachers. We will be left with those close to retirement ~15 years left.

Then those who are newly into teaching, under 5-10 years are looking to leave the industry before they are into it too long and invested in additional masters: which is another issue in itself.

So how do we make them stay?

You can ask any teacher and there are a lot of similar but very different responses. The specifics get us caught in arguments that keep us away from the bigger picture: We need to restructure the system.

In order to grant teachers' wishes and demands as well as give students the foundation they need to be successful in the future world, the structure needs change.

How can we change it? Isn't that the burning question. The way we do it is by reminding us, or creating a WHY behind educating youth so strong, we are propelling them into the unknown future fueled and tooled up.
