Stop Catching up and start Observing

We’re always running behind. Everywhere in life, no matter what career you choose.
Students are catching up on late and missing work. Teachers are catching up on grading, planning, printing, and contacting families about missing work. Businessmen and women are trying to hit their deadlines and not get further behind.
We are spinning our wheels, grinding really hard, and feeling like we aren’t getting anywhere.
Why then, don’t we ever step off of the bike/car/wheel and reassess.
We feel that the only way to show success is to never stop. But what if we pause so that we can really see what’s going on?
You’ve heard that a 3rd party perspective helps because you can’t see when you’re in the depths.
We can be our 3rd party. But we have to step back and see the bigger picture.
We can do this for our students. Give them the opportunity to pause, breath and evaluate what they are missing, what they understand, what they can improve on.
And I’ll tell you a not so secret-secret: if we allow this for our students, teachers will in turn find some space to breath too.
