Round peg in a square hole

That didn’t sit quite right, did it?

In case you’re not sure why, the phrase is famously known as “square peg in round hole.” Maybe to didn’t even notice. But if you think about the geometric relationship (sorry, math teacher) it’s doesn’t quite work.

It’s almost there, and if the hole is big enough, the round peg will fit. But it won’t sit right and may even fall through.

A lot of the times that’s what our professional development time feels like. We have the time Dedicated to improving our profession, but it never quite sits right. And a lot of the time, the goal falls through.

We have the freedom to use the time how we choose. But the educational biggest goal isn’t clear. What are we really working towards? What is our bigger Why that every teacher can get behind and make it their own.

When we are given the freedom to collaborate, many of the times it turns into discussing what is not going well. But solutions never seem to be found (round peg in square hole) OR solutions are found but aren’t pushed into creation to MAKE moves. I feel that it all comes down to the fact that we don’t have an overall purpose we can clear feel see smell taste day in and day out.

what is our long term, infinite purpose?

When our time away from our students is dedicated to improvement, we struggle to define and prioritize what improvement means or looks like. What’s the most important improvement? what can we do Right now to make the future of our profession stronger, efficient, tailor to students‘ futures better? What are the right questions we should be asking?

the round peg fall through our square hole when we don't have a Clear WHY.
