How do you define productivity

We've all been there: you get in the grove of work. You are in flow, everything you need to accomplish is done with ease and you are focused more than you ever been.

but that happens in fleeting spurts. Maybe once a month for some people. It happens with cleaning too. Those times were you suddenly do a deep clean and spend 3 hours scrubbing the corners. Yet you don't touch a mop for another 3 weeks.

How can we maintain productivity like that... or at least more balanced level of productivity? We seem to hit extremes. too much or too little. Students can be like this too. They don't do any homework throughout the semester and then suddenly 15 assignments are turned in in 3 days.

Or they don't complete a project but when given homework club, it's magically done before the end of the school day.

It comes down to drive, dedication and reasoning.

You might have thought I was going to say motivation. But motivation is the reason that it hits extremes. We are not always motivated and that is why we don't always do what we know what we are supposed to do.

School is not an exciting place for most students, academically. What can lead to more is if they can find an internal drive. They have been told they HAVE to go to school. It's illegal under the age of 17 to not attend school.

So, for students to be successful, they'll need to find an internal driver for work completion.

What can that look like? Maybe it's:

-Being left alone by parents/teachers nagging them to get their work done

-Efficiency so they can spend time outside of school working, sports, clubs, or whatever they find important outside of the school day

-Independent learning. Allowing them to work and learn at their own pace and take in the information in a way that makes most sense to them.

-Peer engagement. When they can work with friends or classmates they like, they may be more driven to work with them, especially when they are at similar academic levels.

It's drive, determination, and what bigger picture we can help students create independently, intrinsically that will improve their productivity.
