How do you balance toughening it out and doing what you enjoy

With social media at most students (and adults') disposal, they do not know life without having something to entertain them. They are always looking up or viewing something funny/interesting/unique/weird whatever word you want to fill in, they are entertained.

Which has lead to students assuming they should always be entertained, interested.

They have not learned the true force of patience. There is not much room for practice.

Grades are uploaded and they can see them immediately. Google has alllllllll the answers they need.

But there is a skill and a perk to learning how to toughen up, suck it up and just do what you have to do, even when you don't feel like it.

In order to be patient, you have to be in a situation that practices and tests your patience.

In order to be resilient, you must embrace situations that challenge you.

In order to be successful, you must be put into situations with the possibility of failing.

Society today puts us at ease (relatively). Discomfort is seen as a bad thing. No one wants to be uncomfortable. We seek ease.

But our growth comes from the uncomfortable moments.

Think about a time when you completed something challenging. There was a reward,

there was doubt at times,

there was pride and

there were lessons learned.

How do you balance toughening it out versus doing what you enjoy?

It's back to the long-term game.

Will toughening it out make you better on the other side? Will you grow, learn, and experience new potential?

Or is the lesson you will learn not worth it to you? Will there be zero lessons?

Let's be real. Majority of the society is not putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations enough.

So for the majority of us, the answer (after "it's up to you") is that we could all challenge ourselves a little more.

Test our boundaries, and make ourselves slightly uncomfortable.

You don't have to jump off a cliff or hang glide in the mountains.

But you have far more potential than you give yourself. There is so much more you can do. You just have to accept you will be uncomfortable at times.

Discomfort creates growth.
