Creation vs discovery

A lot of my teaching philosophy has revolved around students discovering concepts on their own, so that they Would have a more in depth understanding of it.

But I haven’t succeeded in keeping that philosophy present in every day lessons.

What I’m beginning to realize is that discovery sounds great. But what if I were able to empower students to create their learning, understanding, skills to be successful.

changing the word from Discovery, as if it’s there they just have to get lucky to find it,

into Creation, where students are in control and have to ability to create their experience. They are able to create learning opportunities for themselves. This puts them in the drivers seat. They are better able to be self reliant, self driven, self disciplined, which in turn will lead them to be creators for the rest of their lives. It’s a skill they will take beyond my classroom.

I don’t need to be in the drivers seat. Not everyday at least.

if we can shift some of teachers’ control into students’ creation, our classrooms will run more smoothly, student behavior will improve, work completion will be more genuine and complete.

we have the opportunity to shift students belief in themselves if we are able to shift out perspective along with it.
